Fine Kyoto Satsuma Landscape Jar Signed Yamashu, C. 1890

Description

A finely painted Kyoto Satsuma covered jar of generous size, signed Yamashu and dating to the late Meiji period. The cream crackled body carries a continuous river landscape: soft hills, pavilions, flowing water and clusters of chrysanthemums, all rendered in pastel enamels of pink, lilac and orange with fine gilt detailing. Broad geometric brocade borders in gold frame the shoulder and foot, giving the jar a balanced and considered profile.

The domed cover repeats the same floral bands and is finished with a gilt knop. The underside bears a black and gold cartouche reading Yamashu (??) together with a red Shimazu crest, characteristic of Kyoto Satsuma studios working for the export market in the late 19th century. A harmonious and well-executed example that displays beautifully and sits comfortably within a refined interior.

Historical Background

Kyoto Satsuma workshops developed a distinctive aesthetic in the later 19th century, favouring soft pastel palettes and delicate landscapes executed with controlled, precise line work. While Satsuma ware from Kagoshima often emphasised dense decoration, Kyoto pieces such as this introduced a lighter artistic mood and were highly regarded by Western collectors. The Yamashu mark appears on well-made Kyoto export pieces of the Meiji period.
