Rare Ukrainian Folk Tapestry, 2nd Half of 19th Century, 2.45m X 1.76m

19th century
Description

At one time this beautiful and rare tapestry would have been included in the generic term 'Bessarabian' kilim denoting a weaving produced anywhere in the Central or South-East Europe. Today, I believe we can attribute it with confidence to the Kyiv region of Central Ukraine. Dating to the second half of the 19th century, it has the technical characteristics of that region including hemp warps, fine soft wool, interlocking wefts which create a solid fabric, exquisite natural dyes, and the ubiquitous use of curved or 'eccentric' wefts. The design is a masterful example of Ukrainian folk art. Rows of offset shrubs mingle with hook beaked exotic birds and other floral ornaments. This composition is framed by a meandering vine within the light blue field and then a separate narrow outer border. The colours are quite wonderful, enhanced by the brilliant use of abrash in the light blues, greens, pinks and yellows that give a sense of depth and texture. Delightful. Note also a beautiful deep purple. Cherished through the generations, this piece has survived in very good condition. It has recently been professionally cleaned.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
