Ashford marble is a dark, bituminous limestone found in Derbyshire, England, which is capable of taking a high polish. It became exceptionally popular during the Victorian era for decorative objects featuring inlaid stone designs.

Pietra dura involves finely cutting and fitting highly polished coloured stones such as malachite, lapis lazuli, and marble into a base stone matrix, usually black marble, to create pictorial designs.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise stone-to-stone fitting without large gaps of cement, hand-beveled edges, natural mineral inclusions in the base limestone, and historical wear consistent with nineteenth-century production methods.

Place the piece flat on a stack of books on an executive desk or within a glass-fronted cabinet to highlight its flat inlaid surface and contrasting floral motif against contemporary decor.

Dust gently with a dry microfiber cloth and avoid chemical cleaners, acidic substances, or excessive moisture, which can dull the high-gloss polish and damage the delicate stone inlay.
