The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large decorative earthenware fruitbowl originates from the 1930 Art Deco period. The ceramic piece stands upon a circular pedestal foot and exhibits a glossy lustre glaze finish. The exterior decoration displays a continuous band of hand-painted tulips in shades of pink, yellow, and blue set against a deep cobalt blue background, with green foliage interspersed between the blooms. Below the floral design, a scalloped border runs around the lower portion of the body above a plain lower section, and the interior is also glazed in rich cobalt blue. The bowl measures 10 cm high and 21 cm wide in practical terms. It suits placement on a sideboard top in a living room, dining room, or hallway as a decorative display object or fruit container within a domestic interior today.

FAQs

Maling pottery was established in North East England in the late eighteenth century, becoming famous in the 1920s and 1930s for vibrant transfer-printed and hand-enamelled decorative earthenware. The tulip pattern is characteristic of their Art Deco production, featuring floral motifs paired with iridescent or cobalt glazes.

These pieces were crafted from moulded earthenware clay, finished with white or tinted tin glazes, hand-painted polychrome enamels, and an overglaze iridescent lustre sheen applied before a final firing.

Authentic Maling ceramics feature factory backstamps on the underside, often including the castle logo, Maling Newcastle On Tyne, pattern names, and painted pattern numbers, along with characteristic light glaze crazing.

Place the bowl as a focal point on a neutral sideboard, dining table, or console to let the strong floral colours contrast against natural wood or contemporary painted surfaces.

Wipe gently using lukewarm water and a mild detergent with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, dishwashers, or prolonged soaking, as these can erode delicate lustre glazes and hand-painted enamel detail.
