Incredible Victorian Micro Mosaic Shell Valentine Triple Frame, Dated 1881
A truly remarkable 19th-century sailor’s shellwork Valentine frame, dated 1881 to the front. This triple photo frame is an exquisite example of Victorian maritime folk art, beautifully handmade from an array of delicate shells arranged in intricate micro mosaic patterns.
Initialled “D” and “A” at the top, this exceptional piece was almost certainly created by a sailor as a romantic keepsake for his loved one. The craftsmanship is extraordinary — countless small shells meticulously arranged to form decorative motifs, displaying both patience and artistic skill.
Though it has sustained some losses over time, the frame retains its original charm, colour, and appeal, standing as a testament to the sentiment and artistry of its era. The back features three photo recesses with hinged flaps and a ribbon loop for hanging on a wall.
