Description

An exceptionally Rare CJ Maons Semi China Blue and White Transfer Supper Set 1835

In the Fountain Pattern, this is an exceptionally rare item to find, and the first time that I have had a supper set on a ceramic tray, they are usually set into wooden trays with brass handles.

All pieces are there, which is also quite a rare find. 1 Lid has been restored, you can see in the images, two corners of curved bottom dishes have been restored, the base tray, has two very small 1-inch hairlines restored on the side.

As this is an exceptionally rare item, restoration is not overly an issue. It can be restored to looking perfect. I have made an allowance in the price if a collector would wish to do this, but currently I am selling it as is.

FAQs

Transferware is pottery decorated by transferring a design from an engraved copper plate onto paper and then onto unglazed ceramic. This technique gained immense popularity in Staffordshire, England, during the 19th century, allowing for intricate, repeatable patterns.

Semi-china and ironstone ceramics were developed as durable, high-fired alternatives to fine porcelain. Potters mixed refined clay with ground stone, feldspar, and china stone to create a robust body capable of withstanding daily use while retaining a smooth, glaze-finished surface.

Authentic pieces typically feature impressed or printed makers marks on the underside corresponding to specific operational periods. Collectors also examine the weight, crazing of the glaze, depth of the blue transfer print, and the characteristic ironstone body density.

Antique transferware brings historical texture and pattern to modern spaces when displayed on open shelving, mounted as wall art, or used as centrepieces on dining tables. Pairing traditional blue and white ceramics with minimalist decor creates a balanced, curated aesthetic.

Antique ceramics should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding dishwashers and harsh abrasives. Due to the porous nature of older earthenware bodies and potential glaze crazing, prolonged soaking should be avoided.
