Marylebone Antiques has dated this piece to the 1880s.
It is of extremely fine quality, the solid walnut tripod base is beautifully carved.
The brass rise and fall mechanism works well, the height can be adjusted to a wide range of sizes.

This would also be very useful as a menu holder in a restaurant / bar setting.
We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor wear here and there. The ratchet mechanisms that hold the tilt in place has one bit of damage on one arm, which means it is shorter, so that side is only supported by half of the mechanism. It is hardly noticeable and still holds firmly in place, it would support just as strong a weight as if there were both sides supporting. It is shown in the images.
