Rams head motifs, or bucrania, originated in ancient Greek and Roman architecture and were later revived during the Neoclassical and Victorian periods for formal garden ornaments and architectural details.

These pieces were typically crafted from fired terracotta or cast stone, often moulded in sections and hand-finished to incorporate classical detailing such as swags, fluting, and sculptural animal heads.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the depth of the patina, natural weathering, wear patterns, mineral deposits, and the composition of the fired clay, which often exhibits characteristics distinct from modern reproductions.

They work effectively as focal points on terraces, flanking garden pathways, or positioned within formal courtyards, and can also be brought indoors as statement decorative objects in entrance halls.

Terracotta is porous and susceptible to frost damage; therefore, pieces should be emptied, elevated from the ground during winter months, and gently cleaned with soft brushes without harsh chemical treatments.
