Art Deco Cast Iron Café Table Base

1900 - 1920
Description

An original cast iron café table base from the 1920s, showcasing bold Art Deco design. The base features a striking stepped star form, rising to a tapered column and finished with an octagonal top plate ready to support a tabletop.

Originally finished in black or dark enamel, the piece has at some point been spray-painted gold, giving it a different character while preserving the crisp detail of the casting. Its robust design was made for use in cafés and bistros, supporting marble, wood, or glass tops with ease.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco metalwork, prominent during the 1920s and 1930s, is characterised by clean geometric shapes, stepped silhouettes, angular profiles, and symmetrical motifs.

Cast iron table bases were manufactured by pouring molten iron into sand moulds, creating heavy, durable structures designed to support heavy marble or timber tops without tipping.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinct casting seams, sharp geometric step moulding, significant physical weight, and structural mounting plates designed for mechanical fixings.

Paired with a contemporary marble, glass, or solid wood tabletop, a cast iron base functions as a bistro dining table or accent table within modern dining rooms or kitchen nooks.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and clean periodically using a mild detergent, ensuring the metal is dried completely to prevent surface corrosion or oxidisation.
