Description

A late Georgian mahogany tilt-top breakfast table, with a rectangular top, raised on a turned column over four scroll-top, out-swept legs finished with brass-capped castors.

The overall condition is very good, having had the top fully restored and the framework underneath the tabletop replaced with a new mahogany frame matching the old damaged support.

Would make a lovely centrepiece in a breakfast room or, alternatively, a splendid wfh office desk.

The Georgian style spans the reigns of the first four Georges, characterised by classical proportions, refined craftsmanship, and the transition from walnut to mahogany as the preferred timber.

Cabinet makers predominantly used solid mahogany and mahogany veneers over secondary softwoods, often incorporating brass castors and fittings for mobility.

Authenticity is determined by hand-cut dovetailing, period-appropriate joinery, timber shrinkage patterns, patination consistent with age, and original hardware without modern machine screw replacements.

Pair the rich wood tones with minimalist modern seating, contemporary lighting, and neutral walls to create a striking contrast between old and new design elements.

Maintain timber hydration by avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying pure beeswax to nourish the polished surface.
