Dutch gilt leather screens originated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, heavily influenced by Spanish leatherworking techniques known as gaufrage. Artisans stamped leather sheets with woodblocks, applied silver leaf covered with yellow lacquer to imitate gold, and hand-painted detailed scenesoften incorporating popular Asian-inspired Chinoiserie motifs.

These screens were constructed using calf or sheep hides mounted onto solid wooden frames. The decorative surfaces were finished with silver or gold leaf, oil paints, and protective varnishes, held around the frame edges with iron or brass upholstery studs.
