Georgian Mahogany Miniature Chest

18th century
Description

A Good Quality And Charming Early 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest, Having Well Figured Top Over Three Long Drawers With Original Brass Knobs And Boxwood Inlaid Escutcheons, Over Elegant Shaped Apron With Original Splayed Bracket Feet.

There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts.

We believe that this particular little Georgian Miniature Chest was probably made as an apprentice piece, due to the relative simplicity of it, combined with the exceptional execution, which maybe suggests that somebody was very much trying to impress somebody else. It is also slightly unusual in form, which again suggests it was made more as a one off item with a specific purpose, as opposed to a scale model of other items.

It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture however and in good condition, ready to be placed straight into the home. It would work wonderfully on top of a dressing table, or full size chest of drawers, in a bedroom for storage of cuff links, jewellery or similar small but valuable items.

Circa 1800.

Height 11.5in.

Width 14in.

Depth 8.5in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Miniature chests were often created as cabinetmaker apprentice pieces to demonstrate craftsmanship, or produced as salesman samples and tabletop storage during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Pieces from this era typically feature solid or veneered mahogany, hand-cut dovetail joints, pine or oak secondary drawer linings, and small brass knobs or escutcheons.

Look for period-appropriate construction details such as hand-cut dovetails, secondary timber wear, natural oxidisation on drawer backs, and period-correct hardware fittings.

A miniature chest serves as functional tabletop storage on a sideboard, desk, or dressing table, holding small items, stationery, or jewellery.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to protect the timber, keeping the object away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
