This 19th-century Chinese table screen is a Qing Dynasty triptych crafted from dark brown hardwood and finished with extensive mother-of-pearl inlay. The dark timber ground is detailed with iridescent floral motifs, detailed Chinese countryside scenes, and intricate carved openwork fretwork along the shaped panel borders and stand. The structured frame rests upon flat feet and incorporates lower shelf sections with geometric mother-of-pearl dot inlays. Measuring 82 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 22 cm deep, this piece fits easily onto a large sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study to display traditional landscape and figurative scenes. The decorative arrangement stands upright on a sturdy base, incorporating multiple pierced panels with contrasting shell highlights catching the light. The stepped base features low-relief floral carvings flanked by delicate geometric stringing and open friezes that echo the upper archways. Placed in a modern home, this tabletop screen serves as an ornamental centrepiece on a wide cabinet, console table, or deep shelving unit, adding structured depth and traditional craftsmanship to an interior scheme without requiring floor space.

A Chinese table screen is a small, decorative panel mounted on a stand or hinged frame, traditionally placed on a scholars desk to shield writing materials from draughts and prevent ink from drying too quickly.

They were typically constructed from dense tropical hardwoods such as hongmu, zitan, or rosewood, and decorated with lacquered panels, carved relief work, or mother-of-pearl (nacre) inlay.

Authentic 19th-century inlay features hand-cut shell pieces fitted directly into hand-carved recess grooves in the timber, displaying natural iridescence and subtle surface variation.

A table screen serves as a striking focal point on a hallway console, sideboard, or desk, pairing well with understated modern ceramics or structured greenery.

Keep the screen away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, and clean the wood and inlay gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without harsh liquid cleaners.
