19th Century French Neo-Classical wall carving or over-door.

With shaped concave sides and flora surround mould. The central panel featuring a carved figure of Minerva, flanked by foliate acanthus carving scrolling swags. All finished in the original gilt and crimson decoration. 

Circa 1840.

A dessus-de-porte is a decorative architectural panel mounted above an interior doorway, widely utilized in French classical interiors from the 17th through 19th centuries to enhance architectural proportions.

These panels were typically hand-carved from solid hardwoods such as oak or lime wood, coated with gesso, and finished using gold leaf gilding alongside hand-painted polychrome tempera or oil pigments.

Authentic period panels exhibit hand-chiseled wood gouge marks, natural age cracking or shrinkage along the grain lines, and subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing the underlying gesso or red bole layer.

Position the panel directly above an internal doorframe, mount it above a fireplace mantelpiece, or hang it as a central artwork feature over a hallway console table.

Remove surface dust using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cloths, water, or commercial polished cleansers that can dissolve water gilding or soften historical gesso layers.
