This Victorian percussion pocket pistol originates from 1850. It consists of a dark brown walnut grip with a chequered texture and a carved shell crest near the top, coupled with an engraved steel receiver and an octagonal barrel in a weathered metallic finish. The hammer sits atop the action, and the construction incorporates functional mechanical elements including a drop-down trigger designed for pocket carry. Measuring 10 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, the firearm is compact in scale. Displayed as an antique collectible within a gentleman's library theme, the piece fits neatly on a bookshelf or within a cabinet display. The combination of dark wood and distressed steel surfaces provides a period display element for private study collections or historic display arrangements.

Developed in the early nineteenth century, percussion pocket pistols utilised a cap lock mechanism to ignite gunpowder, providing a compact personal defence firearm prior to the widespread adoption of modern cartridges.

Pistols from this period were constructed using forged steel or iron for the barrel and lock mechanism, combined with dense hardwoods such as walnut or ebony for the carved stock.

Authenticity is indicated by regional proof marks, maker stamps on the lock or barrel, hand-engraved metalwork, and precise period-correct features like turn-off octagonal barrels and chequered grips.

Compact antique firearms are ideally mounted within bespoke glass shadow boxes or positioned on brass display stands atop a study desk or bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes.

Store the item in a stable humidity environment, apply microcrystalline wax to metal components to prevent oxidisation, and wipe wooden grips with a dry microfiber cloth.
