Burmese lacquerware, known locally as yun, has a rich tradition centred in regions such as Bagan. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, artisans produced elaborate octagonal and folding tables incorporating intricate incised iconography for both domestic use and colonial export.

These tables are constructed with a timber or woven bamboo frame coated in multiple layers of thitsi resin, derived from the Melanorrhoea usitata tree. Red coloration is achieved using ground cinnabar pigment, while etched lines are filled with black carbon or graphite.

Authentic pieces exhibit fine, hand-incised detailing (yun decoration) depicting Burmese folklore, astrological signs, or court scenes rather than modern surface painting. Age is evidenced by natural surface craquelure, slight wear around the joints, and a weighted, resinous texture.
