FAQs

Folding screens originated in ancient China during the Han dynasty before spreading to other parts of Asia, including India and Japan, where they were utilised as functional partitions and decorative art objects.

Traditional screens are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as teak, sheesham, or mango wood, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved relief details, and integrated panels of fabric or wood.

Authenticity is assessed through the examination of hand-tool marks, wood patina, traditional joinery methods, wear patterns on the base, and the type of metal hinges or fixings used.

A folding screen can be positioned against a plain wall to add architectural texture, used to zone an open-plan living space, or placed in a bedroom to create a functional dressing area.

Preservation involves dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, maintaining stable room humidity, and applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to unsealed wooden surfaces.
