Early 19th Century Spode Botanical Dessert Service For 12, Felspar Porcelain

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Touch of Time Antiques

A rare and exceptional Spode Felspar porcelain dessert service for twelve, c.1820, comprising twelve plates, four shaped serving dishes, and a dramatic elevated centrepiece.

The items are made of “Felspar” porcelain, a technological novelty introduced by Spode in early 1820s. Felspar porcelain had a high content of feldspar, which gave the porcelain not only brilliant white translucency, but also made it more durable and therefore very popular for dessert and dinner wares.

Each piece is finely hand-painted with richly detailed botanical subjects, encircled by ornate gilt floral borders accented in red, and finished with a gadrooned rim - one of the Spode’s prettiest patterns - no. 4033.

It is a superb example of Regency period tableware, both decorative and highly collectable.

Marked: Each piece bears the pattern number and either the Spode stamp or handwritten mark.

Provenance: Gwysaney Hall, Flintshire, Wales
