An antique games compendium is a fitted wooden box containing multiple traditional tabletop games, such as chess, draughts, backgammon, and cribbage, popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods for domestic entertainment.

These boxes were typically constructed from high-quality hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, featuring brass hardware, leather-lined folding boards, and playing pieces made from bone, ivory, or turned wood.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit period-appropriate joinery, original brass locks and hinges, genuine patina on the wood, and complete sets of traditional game pieces constructed from period materials like bone or boxwood.

Placed closed upon a coffee table or open on a side table, it introduces rich textural warmth, historical narrative, and interactive focal points to a sophisticated living space.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood splitting or warping, and periodically apply a microcrystalline wax to nourish the polished wooden surface.
