Victorian leaded glass windows gained widespread popularity in the late 19th century, influenced by the Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts movements. These decorative panels were commonly installed in residential front doors, hallway transoms, and stairwell windows to add colour and privacy.

Traditional leaded panels are constructed using individual pieces of coloured or textured glass joined by H-shaped lead channels known as cames. Decorative elements were often hand-painted with vitreous enamel paints and kiln-fired to permanently fuse the artwork to the glass surface.

Authentic late Victorian panels feature natural oxidisation on the lead cames, slight surface irregularities in hand-blown glass, and hand-painted enamel details showing age-consistent wear. The solder joints at the intersections of the lead came will also exhibit signs of historical patina.

A leaded glass panel can be suspended within a window frame to catch natural light, mounted in a custom timber stand on a deep windowsill, or integrated into an interior partition wall. Displaying the glass where natural or directional light can pass through highlights the colour and texture.

Clean leaded glass gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly dampened microfibre cloth with distilled water. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, ammonia, or excessive moisture, which can damage painted enamels and weaken historical lead joints.
