Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Door porters, also known as doorstops, became widely popular in Britain during the nineteenth century to keep heavy interior doors open. Manufactured predominantly from cast iron using foundry moulds, they were produced in numerous figurative designs, with animals and canine breeds being among the most frequent subjects.

Victorian doorstops were produced using sand-casting techniques where molten iron was poured into two-part sand moulds. Once cooled, the excess flash metal was trimmed, and the surface was finished with hand-painted oil or enamel paints.

Authentic pieces display distinct mould seam lines along the edges, smooth backs or hollowed rears from traditional casting techniques, and heavy weight relative to their size. Surface wear typically reveals underlying dark iron or layers of original primer rather than modern uniform rust treatments.

These functional objects can be positioned flanking a doorway in an entrance hall or placed beside a fireplace hearth. Smaller or paired examples also serve effectively as heavy bookends on open shelving or a console table.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water and liquid cleaning agents, as moisture promotes rust beneath original paint layers; a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax can be applied to seal and protect the surface.
