Very Large Cone Shaped Wooden Barrel

19th century
Description

A very large cone shaped barrel with a pierced shelf midway.

To be honest we do not really know what the original purpose of this was, but it would make a lovely looking container for a large plant or large flower display in a big hallway or conservatory.

The condition is very good with a great colour and patina.

Height 110 cms

Width at top 30 cms

Width at base 60 cms

This large decorative vessel from the rustic country period takes the form of a tapered wooden barrel with vertical staves. The timber exhibits a dark brown finish with a rich patina, complemented by woven reed hoop binding, a rolled top rim, and a single metal band encircling the middle. Visible details include minor surface wear, a weathered grain, and a small side projection. Standing 90 cm high, 54 cm wide, and 35 cm deep, the piece offers substantial presence for interior placement. In a modern home, this vessel functions effectively beside the front door as an umbrella stand or umbrella holder, or inside a spacious hallway or conservatory as an unusual container for large plants or flower displays. Its sturdy upright stance and traditional construction integrate easily into rustic farmhouse settings. The open top allows easy access for stowing walking sticks or long-stemmed foliage, adding a practical touch of historical character to entranceways and living spaces.

Coopered barrels are wooden vessels constructed from individual shaped staves bound together by hoops, historically used for storing dry goods, grain, or processing agricultural produce.

Coopers traditionally utilised durable timbers such as oak, pine, or chestnut for staves, securing them with flexible wooden hoops, wicker, or iron bands.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-shaped staves, organic wear patterns, historical marks of use, and traditional binding materials such as split wood or hand-formed metal.

These floor-standing vessels function as functional accents, serving as umbrella stands, stick stands, or plant containers in hallways and entrances.

Timber vessels require stable indoor humidity to prevent the wood staves from shrinking or loosening, along with gentle dusting using a soft dry cloth.
