Antique treen should be cleaned only with a dry cloth or a slightly damp cloth with mild soap, followed by immediate drying. Regular application of food-safe mineral oil or beeswax helps prevent the wood from drying out and cracking.

These textural pieces can be displayed on a kitchen island, sideboard, or open shelving to introduce warmth and historical character to modern spaces. They function effectively as standalone decorative objects or for holding dried botanicals.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit tool marks from lathe turning or hand-carving, shrinkage cracks, and deep patination accumulated through decades of use and washing. The underside often features a central pip or lathe chuck mark characteristic of early turning methods.

Coopers and turners typically utilised dense domestic hardwoods such as sycamore, maple, beech, and elm. Sycamore was particularly favored for dairy vessels because it did not impart strong flavors or odours to milk products.

Treen refers to small domestic and agricultural wooden objects made before mass production. In the eighteenth century, dairy bowls were essential utensils used in farmhouses for setting milk and skimming cream.
