Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Bold scroll-carved legs: heavy architectural shaping from the nineteenth century.
Gadrooned border around the inset marble: ornamental carving done by hand.
Veneered frieze in flame mahogany: thick cut on a solid ground.
Softening on the carved relief: natural wear from handling over generations.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

The Sustainable Choice

This William IV console table dates from the nineteenth century in a grand Regency style. The piece uses dark brown mahogany timber and a grey-veined light marble top, decorated with a gadrooned apron rim and carved scroll front legs terminating in carved feet. Signs of age include marks and scuffs commensurate with age and use. The table measures 94 cm high, 153 cm wide, and 64 cm deep. Suitable for placement beside the front door or in a hallway, this console table provides a functional surface for keys, post, or decorative lamps in a traditional home interior. The wall-mounted design ensures stability while maintaining a compact footprint against an entryway wall.

FAQs

The William IV period (18301837) represents a transition between Regency design and Victorian proportions. Furniture from this era typically features substantial proportions, heavy carved acanthus leaves, gadrooned edges, and bold scroll legs.

These tables were constructed from solid mahogany or rosewood, frequently topped with white or grey-veined marble slabs. Construction methods included hand-carved detailing, flame mahogany veneers, and mortise-and-tenon joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved gadrooning, scrolls, or foliage along the apron and leg supports, paired with age-appropriate wear to the timber frame. Original marble slabs typically present natural veining and unpolished hand-cut edges on the underside.

Position the console table against a neutral wall in an entryway or hallway to serve as a focal point. Balance the dark timber and marble top with contemporary artwork above and simple ceramic or glassware display items.

Clean the marble top using a pH-neutral stone cleaner and absorb liquid spills immediately to prevent etching or staining. Maintain the mahogany base by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax annually.
