Description

A quite rare iron Fairbanks size 12 set of scales in beautiful original condition with still some very charming traces of gold and orange/red painted decoration.

The scales work making it a useful and very decorative item.

Fairbanks Scales is one of the oldest US industrial manufacturing companies founded in 1823 in Vermont and soon expanded to have offices in Boston and New York. In 1830 they had the foresight to sell manufacturing rights to H. Poole and Sons in England (Liverpool and then Birmingham) in the 1830s.

We believe this set of scales were produced in Birmingham in the 1870's.

An original 19th-century Victorian industrial balance scale from the Fairbanks line, produced in Birmingham circa 1870, is constructed from dark brown cast iron and wrought iron. This working equal-arm balance features a central twisted iron column support rising from a four-footed cast iron base, a horizontal balance beam with an upright finial, and two suspended metal pans hanging from chains on the left and vertical rigid metal bars on the right. Traces of original gold and orange-red painted decoration remain across the dark metal surface, showing age wear and patina. Measuring approximately 40 cm in height, this piece fits well placed on a sideboard top in a study, kitchen or living room interior today as a decorative accent or functional item.
