Bottle coasters emerged in the late eighteenth century to protect polished dining tables from moisture rings and spills left by wine bottles and decanters. They were traditionally slid along the mahogany surface between guests after the servants had withdrawn.

These items are typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, shaped on a lathe to create concentric rings and raised rims. Some examples feature inset button centres or felt linings on the underside to prevent scratching.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-turned tool marks, patination consistent with age, and dense timber grains typical of old-growth trees. The base often shows circular friction wear and minor shrinkage cracks characteristic of mature hardwoods.

Such pieces can be utilised on a sideboard or dining table to hold small decorative objects, or employed functionally for their original purpose during dinner parties. The rich timber grain adds warmth and organic texture to contemporary schemes.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sudden humidity changes. Apply a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the grain and protect the surface from moisture.
