Torchere stands were originally designed in seventeenth and eighteenth-century Europe to elevate candles, oil lamps, or incense burners, improving illumination across large rooms. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, they evolved into decorative pedestals used to display sculpture, urns, or botanical displays.

Traditional pedestals and torcheres were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, often featuring carved motifs, turned columns, or cast brass mountings. High-grade joinery, hand-carved accents, and weighted circular bases ensured stability for heavy objects.
