This nineteenth-century decorative charger is formed from porcelain with overglaze enamel painting and a gilded lattice border. The oval piece displays a classical mythological scene within a pierced reticulated rim finished in gold and multicolour tones. The central hand-painted tableau depicts Bacchus and Ariadne on the island of Naxos, accompanied by attendants and cherubs amongst rocky landscape details. The outer edge features an intricate pierced reticulated gallery surround with a textured gilded finish. Measuring 2.5 cm high, 31 cm wide and 24 cm deep, this nineteenth-century Vienna plaque is suitable for display within a grand Regency interior scheme. Placed above a sideboard on a console table or within a dedicated display cabinet, the object functions as a focal wall or tabletop decorative art piece. The neoclassical design suits traditional reception rooms, dining spaces or studies where historical porcelain collections are exhibited.

Vienna porcelain refers to ceramics produced by the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna or late 19th-century European workshops operating in the Vienna style. These ceramics are characterised by classical mythological artwork, elaborate gilding, and detailed enamel painting.

These chargers were crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. Figurative compositions were rendered using overglaze enamels, while borders featured applied gold leaf or liquid gold gilding over pierced, reticulated lattice structures.

Authentic pieces frequently bear an underglaze blue shield or beehive mark on the reverse. Period items exhibit precise execution in figurative enamelling, correct porcelain density, and natural wear patterns along the unglazed foot rim.

Decorative chargers can be mounted on wall surfaces with specialist plate hangers or supported on stands atop a console table or sideboard. Placing neoclassical imagery against simplified modern backdrops creates an effective visual contrast.

Gilded porcelain requires dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to protect delicate surface enamels. Abrasive chemical cleaners, water immersion, and harsh solvents must be avoided to prevent the degradation of gilded highlights.
