A bocage figure is a type of 18th-century ceramic sculpture featuring a background of applied, modelled leaves and flowers behind the main subject, a style popularised by English and continental factories.

These pieces were crafted from soft-paste porcelain, hand-shaped or press-moulded, and decorated with enamels and gilding before being fired in a kiln.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paste body under magnification, checking for factory marks such as the crowned D or anchor and dagger, and assessing the characteristic glaze pooling and hand-painted enamel palette.

These decorative objects work well displayed on mantels, within glass-fronted cabinets, or on occasional tables where their intricate detailing can be appreciated up close.

Keep porcelain out of direct sunlight to prevent enamel fading, dust gently with a soft, dry brush, and avoid immersing pieces in water, particularly if they feature old repairs or delicate bocage work.
