During the Victorian era, taxidermy domes and dioramas became popular household ornaments as interest in natural history, ornithology, and exotic exploration grew amongst the middle and upper classes.

These pieces typically consist of hand-blown blown glass bell jars, ebonised wooden bases, arsenic-treated bird specimens, and artificial foliage or natural dried botanicals arranged in a naturalistic scene.

Authentic pieces usually feature hand-blown glass with minor imperfections and bubbles, aged ebonised wooden bases, traditional paper or felt linings underneath, and taxidermy methods characteristic of 19th-century preparation.

They make striking statement pieces on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or side tables, working particularly well within eclectic, cabinet of curiosities, or dark academia design schemes.

Keep the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the plumage, avoid using liquid cleaners directly on the glass or specimens, and do not remove the dome unless necessary to protect the fragile contents from dust and humidity.
