Miles Griffiths Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the Georgian era.
Very well carved, the body of the lion is very rotund and strong looking with a carved flowing mane. Very much modelled on an earlier pre-aksumite sphinx found in Eritea, Africa that has a simpler lion’s face. In excellent condition, with no damage to the lion, one corner of the plinth has been off, but is all there. Carved into the front is 1709. A wonderful 18th century antique architectural stone lion.
