Derby Porcelain Figural Candlesticks, Georgian C. 1770

18th century
Description

A rare and decorative pair of 18th-century English porcelain candlesticks made at Derby around 1770. Each slender figure stands before a flowering bocage: he in a rustic striped coat and tricorn hat, she in a corseted bodice holding a basket of blooms. Above them rises a candle socket formed as an open flower. The scrollwork bases, applied flowers and gilded accents echo Derby’s finest rococo style. The soft enamel palette of pinks, greens and blues, the delicate modeling of facial features and naturalistic foliage mark the high-point of the factory’s artistic development under sculptor Jeffreys Hamet O’Neale. Bases are unmarked, as typical for the period.

Dimensions (male): H 25.5 cm × W 13 cm × D 11 cm, 954 g

Dimensions (female): H 24.7 cm × W 12 cm × D 10 cm, 1 074 g

Condition: Male—left hand missing, fine kiln crack at right ankle, minor petal losses; Female—left hand lightly overpainted, minor flower-petal losses; otherwise excellent.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th century, Georgian figural candlesticks combine functional candle holders with sculpted ceramic figures, often depicting pastoral or romantic classical themes influenced by the European Rococo movement.

Early English examples were predominantly crafted from soft-paste porcelain, painted by hand with overglaze enamel pigments, and finished with burnished gilt highlights atop scrolling Rococo bases.

Authentic 18th-century pieces typically feature soft-paste porcelain bodies, precise hand-painted detailing, bocage floral accents, patch marks on the underside, and characteristic Rococo scrollwork around the bases.

Placing a pair atop a mantelpiece, sideboard, or dining console provides a sculptural focal point, pairing historical ceramic craftsmanship with modern minimalism or maximalist arrangements.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to clean intricate floral bocage and figures, avoiding water or harsh chemical cleaners that could damage overglaze enamel or gilding.
