Marquetry is an ancient decorative technique involving the application of pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns and pictures, gaining significant popularity during the 17th century and experiencing revivals throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Traditional marquetry incorporates a variety of contrasting timber veneers such as walnut, oak, mahogany, satinwood, and exotic woods to create natural colour gradations and tonal depth without the use of paint.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut veneer joints, natural ageing and patina of the timbers, traditional adhesive residues, and hand-planed or scraped backing boards consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

These large-scale decorative pieces serve as powerful focal points on neutral walls, adding warmth, texture, and historical narrative when juxtaposed against contemporary minimalist architecture.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading and timber drying, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the wooden surface.
