FAQs

Spider leg tables emerged during the Georgian period, characterised by their exceptionally slender, turned wooden legs and delicate gateleg or drop-leaf mechanism designed to save space in compact domestic settings.

These tables are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring intricate woodturning, mortise and tenon joints, and hinged drop leaves supported by swing-out legs.

Authenticity is determined by examining timber ageing, hand-cut joinery, old surface wear patterns, peg construction, and the type of secondary wood used in the frame and undercarriage.

This piece works effectively in a living room or hallway as a compact surface, contrasting well against modern minimalist decor while adding historical texture and architectural interest.

Preserve the finish by keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the timber.
