Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, pedestals and plant stands were popular interior furnishings designed to elevate decorative items, classical marble busts, or exotic indoor flora. Influenced by Rococo Revival and Neoclassical styles, these pieces added architectural height and structure to formal reception rooms.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut for the carved bases, often paired with inset stone tops like alabaster, marble, or onyx. Construction involved traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved relief work, and shaped lower tiers for added stability.

Authentic period examples feature hand-carved detailing with subtle variations between paired items, genuine age-related wear on the timber finish, and natural veining within stone tops. Examining the underside typically reveals hand-planed wood surfaces and traditional structural construction rather than uniform modern machine cuts.

These pedestals work effectively positioned in empty corners, bay windows, or flanking a doorway to display contemporary greenery, ceramic vessels, or sculpted artwork. Pairing dark carved timber with minimalist decor creates a high-contrast focal point within modern living spaces.

Alabaster tops should be cleaned with a soft, slightly damp cloth and kept away from standing water or acidic liquids, as natural stone can stain. The timber framework requires dusting with a dry cloth and occasional application of clear beeswax polish to maintain the wood surface.
