This fabulous ENGLISH BLUE & WHITE TRANSFER PRINTED CHARGER dates from circa 1840.

It bears the printed mark for MINTON and the name of the PATTERN ‘CHINESE MARINE’ to the reverse.

The charger has a gadrooned edge and a clear, well-defined transfer,

The condition is good. There are no cracks, chips or restoration.

FAQs

Transferware developed in Staffordshire, England, during the late eighteenth century as an industrial method to replicate hand-painted imported Chinese porcelain. Patterns were etched onto copper plates, printed onto tissue paper, and transferred onto earthenware vessels before final glazing.

Nineteenth-century chargers were composed of refined earthenware or ironstone bodies sealed under a clear lead glaze. The blue patterns were executed using cobalt oxide pigments, which withstood the high temperatures of ceramic kilns.

Authentic pieces frequently bear impressed or printed maker marks on the underside, including pattern name cartouches or factory initials. Examining transfer seams, natural glaze crazing, and the character of the earthenware body also assists in authentication.

Large chargers are often displayed on wooden stands atop sideboards, mantelpieces, or open shelving to act as visual focal points. They can also be wall-mounted in symmetrical groupings to complement classic or contemporary colour schemes.
