Chinese Porcelain Bowl, James Giles Decorated, London, C. 1765.

Description

Chinese porcelain bowl, decorated in the James Giles workshop, London, c. 1765; the porcelain c. 1750. The fluted bowl, hand painted in famille rose style enamels,with panels of Chinese boys, holding birds in garden settings, and panels of flowering plants.

Divided by Japanese brocade style panels of chrysanthemum Mons against a gilt cell diaper motif, on an iron red ground.

The interior with a further iron red chrysanthemum Mon and four petals.

Diameter – 14 cm, 5 1/2”.

Height – 6.5 cm, 2 1/2”.

Condition – Minor wear to the gilding. No damage. No restoration.

A similar example can be found in the Ashmoleum Museum, Oxford, and

illustration 95, in ‘James Giles, China and Glass Painter’, Stephen Hanscombe.

In the 18th century, plain undecorated or partially decorated Chinese export porcelain was imported into England and enamelled by independent London workshops, most prominently the studio of James Giles.

The base body consists of hard-paste Chinese porcelain, fired at high temperatures before overglaze enamel pigments and gilding were applied by hand and re-fired in lower-temperature muffle kilns.

Authentic pieces are identified by signature palette colours such as distinctive iron-red, wet-looking gilding, characteristic figure painting, and stylistic foliage patterns typical of the Soho workshop.

These pieces function as focal points when displayed on mahogany sideboards, within glazed bookcases, or as central accent pieces on mantelpieces alongside contemporary art.
