Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Chinese altar table belongs to the 1900 period and reflects traditional Chinese design. Made from elm and hardwood, the piece displays a warm brown timber colour with a smooth polished finish. The rectangular top terminates in upturned everted flanges and rests above a geometrically pierced frieze adorned with dragon heads and openwork fretwork. The square-section legs showcase carved flowering stems, tassels, and scrollwork, all united by wooden stretchers. Measuring 85 cm high, 119 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, the console table suits placement in a gentleman's library or beside the front door to display decorative items, lamps, or small plants against a hallway wall in a modern home.

FAQs

Traditionally placed in Chinese homes and temples, altar tables were designed to display ancestral tablets, incense burners, and ceremonial offerings during family or religious rituals.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as elm, zelkova, or rosewood using complex mortise-and-tenon joinery created without metal nails or glue.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut joinery, everted flange ends, openwork carving details, and natural surface patination accumulated over time.

A Chinese altar table functions effectively as an entryway console, hallway focal point, or behind a sofa, styled alongside contemporary art or minimalist ceramics.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply beeswax occasionally to protect the finish.
