Treen refers to small, functional wooden domestic objects made by hand or on a lathe before the widespread use of ceramics and plastics. The term derives from the old word for tree, encompassing items from bowls and spoons to goblets and boxes.

Craftsmen frequently used dense local hardwoods such as boxwood, fruitwoods like pear and apple, sycamore, and maple. These timbers were selected for their fine grain, stability, and suitability for lathe turning.

Authentic pieces display distinct tool marks, such as concentric lathe lines or hand-carved facets, alongside a rich patina developed from centuries of handling and natural oxidisation. Examination of the wood species and construction methods helps verify the period.

Antique treen provides tactile warmth and organic texture to modern spaces. Grouping turned wooden vessels on open shelving, sideboards, or coffee tables introduces historical depth and a sense of curated craftsmanship.

Wooden treen should be kept away from direct sunlight, central heating, and high humidity to prevent splitting or warping. Cleaning requires only a soft, dry cloth, avoiding water immersion and harsh chemical polishes.
