Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Side-hung drawer with grooved sides: early drawer construction.
Pegged mortise and tenon joints: traditional hand-built frame construction.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century Jacobean Revival side table comes in dark brown oak with brass hardware, featuring a rectangular top with chamfered edges over a single frieze drawer with arch-topped carved arcading and brass drop handles. The construction uses peg joints and block and turned supports united by H-shaped bobbin stretchers, supported on turned feet with a slightly misaligned piece on the top and good patina showing age. The piece measures 68 cm high, 84 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. Placed beside the front door, it functions as a practical surface for mail, keys, and daily essentials in an English country house interior.

FAQs

A bobbin turned table features legs, stretchers, or supports crafted on a lathe to create a sequence of repeating rounded, bulbous shapes reminiscent of thread spools. Popularised in 17th-century Europe, this decorative woodturning technique is prominent in Jacobean and Carolean style furniture.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or beech. Assembly relies on mortise and tenon joinery often secured with wooden pegs, while drawers frequently feature hand-cut dovetails and carved front friezes.

Authentic period pieces show subtle irregularities in the turned bobbins due to hand-lathe crafting, alongside historical wear on the stretchers where feet rested. Search for authentic timber patination, hand-carved drawer fronts, and original cast brass hardware.

Place the table as a console in an entryway or alongside a sofa to add textural contrast against minimalist backdrop elements. Pair the dark timber with contemporary ceramics, simple glassware, or modern artwork to balance historic character with modern design.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Position the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or splitting.
