This antique single-barrel percussion pistol originates from the nineteenth century Georgian period and is styled for a gentleman's library. The piece consists of a dark brown walnut stock paired with a steel hammer mechanism and bright brass fittings, including a curved trigger guard, side plate, front muzzle cap, and a rounded butt cap at the rear. Visible details comprise the wooden grain of the contoured handle, the exposed screw fixings of the lockplate, and the textured patina across the metal components. The small firearm measures approximately 25 cm in length, making it well-suited for compact display. In a contemporary home, this collectible firearm works effectively as an interior display piece on a bookshelf, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or on a study desk alongside leather-bound volumes. The compact proportions allow it to sit easily among other artifacts on open shelving or within curated decorative arrangements in a study or home office setting.

The percussion ignition system was invented in the early 19th century as an evolution from the flintlock system, utilising a copper cap filled with fulminate of mercury to ignite the main powder charge. Many earlier 18th-century flintlock pistols were retrofitted with percussion locks during the 1820s and 1830s to improve reliability in damp weather conditions.

Early pistols were crafted with shaped hardwood stocks, predominantly dense European walnut, fitted with forged iron or steel barrels and lock mechanisms. Brass or steel was employed for decorative and structural mountings, including the trigger guard, side plate, ramrod pipes, and butt cap.

Authentic period pieces display genuine signs of historical age, such as natural surface patination on metalwork, smooth wear on wood contact points, and period-appropriate proof marks stamped into the barrel. Modifications, such as conversion from flintlock to caplock, often leave visible plugged holes or altered lockplates that indicate historical period adjustments.

An antique firearm serves as a tactile historical artefact when displayed mounted in a custom shadow-box frame or positioned on a weighted stand upon a dark wood bookshelf or mantelpiece. Integrating it alongside leather-bound volumes, brass instruments, or botanical studies creates a curated, academic aesthetic in study or library settings.

Metal components should be kept dry and protected with a light coating of microcrystalline wax or specialist oil to prevent active corrosion and oxidisation. Wood stocks require minimal intervention, benefiting from occasional applications of neutral conservation-grade beeswax to maintain moisture balance without stripping the original patina.
