Ashford black marble refers to a carboniferous limestone found in Derbyshire, England, which takes a deep black polish and was famously used in the nineteenth century to create decorative objects and obelisks often inlaid with coloured minerals.

These pieces were crafted from polished black limestone and decorated using the pietra dura technique, where micro-mosaics of various semi-precious stones, fossils, and marbles were embedded into hand-carved recesses.

Authentic items typically display deep, uniform black limestone bases, precise hand-cut stone inlays without modern synthetic adhesives, and signs of age-related wear such as minor surface micro-abrasions on the polished edges.

Placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, an obelisk introduces classical geometry and rich texture, contrasting sharply against minimalist modern surfaces or complementing traditional dark wood furniture.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and avoid all chemical cleaners, acidic liquids, and excessive moisture, which can dull the historical polish of the limestone.
