This is a wonderful antique Victorian mahogany games compendium, circa 1860 in date.
The hinged lid reveals fitted compartments, the interior with a lift-out tray fitted with boxwood and ebony draft pieces, a cribbage board, bone dominoes, playing cards, gilt counters, a shaker, painted metal horses and riders for steeple chase, card whist markers, a small gavel, dice and other associated items.
The twin hinged front fitted with an attractive boxwood and ebony chess set and with leather game boards with chess, backgammon and the steeple chase inset into the underside of the lid.
It is not only a collectable set but a compendium which is guaranteed to provide a lot of fun.
THE BOTANICAL NAME FOR THE MAHOGANY THIS ITEM IS MADE OF IS SWIETENIA MACROPHYLLA AND THIS TYPE OF MAHOGANY IS NOT SUBJECT TO CITES REGULATION.
