FAQs

Millinery blocks have been utilised by hat makers for centuries to shape and form felt, straw, and fabric hats into specific designs. Traditionally turned from dense hardwoods by specialist artisans, these blocks were essential tools in commercial hat production and private tailoring.

Authentic hat blocks are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, beech, or walnut to withstand the pressure of stretching and steaming wet materials. They are usually hand-turned on a lathe with precision to ensure symmetrical shaping for specific cap and hat styles.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of traditional lathe turning, maker stamps or size markings, and natural ageing of the timber such as wax accumulation, pinholes from blocking, and oxidisation. Modern reproductions often lack the weight, patina, and tool marks characteristic of working workshop tools.

These sculptural wooden objects function well as decorative display pieces on open shelving, mantelpieces, or console tables. Their organic forms and rich patinas add historical texture and architectural interest to contemporary or eclectic spaces.

Preserve the timber by keeping the object away from direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and rapid temperature fluctuations. Maintenance involves occasional gentle dusting with a dry cloth and the application of neutral furniture wax to nourish the antique wood surface.
