FAQs

Toleware refers to articles of tinned sheet metal that are painted and lacquered, a craft that gained popularity in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries as an affordable alternative to precious metals.

These pieces are typically constructed from rolled sheet iron or tinplate, shaped into functional forms, coated with layers of paint or lacquer, and often hand-decorated with gilt or contrasting colour accents.

Authentic items show signs of age such as craquelure in the paint, natural oxidation of the underlying metal, hand-painted details rather than printed patterns, and traditional soldered seams.

Position it in an entryway or hallway to serve as both a functional walking stick holder and a vibrant sculptural accent that introduces colour and historical character to contemporary spaces.

Clean surfaces gently with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners or chemical solvents that could damage the aged paint finish, and keep away from excessive moisture.
