Description

Good pair of late 19th century Scottish cast iron "Robbie Burns" mantel decoration or door stops with original painted decoration. They are both stamped on the back with a makers from Kirkcaldy in Fife but I can't quite make the name out. I think these were originally fireside mantel decorations as I think they are too light for doorstops. They are very nice with the original paint and are a proper pair, left and right facing.

These pieces often depict traditional themes, literary figures like Robert Burns, or scenes of rural life, becoming popular as domestic souvenirs and decorative items during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

They were typically produced using sand-casting methods with durable grey iron, then hand-painted with oil-based pigments to highlight specific details and characters.

Authenticity is assessed through surface wear, the weight and thickness of the casting, consistency of the hand-painted polychrome finishes, and the presence of expected oxidation patterns underneath.

Place them on a focal surface such as a fireplace shelf or a deep bookshelf to add historical texture, structural contrast, and a narrative element to contemporary room schemes.

Keep the metal away from high humidity to prevent rust, dust gently with a soft dry brush, and avoid using liquid cleaners or chemical polishes that could damage the original painted surface.
