A snuff mull is a traditional container used in Scotland for holding powdered tobacco, known as snuff. The word mull derives from the Scottish term for a rounded box or vessel, often crafted from animal horns.

Snuff mulls were typically crafted from ram or cow horns, often featuring silver mounts, shields, hinges, and occasionally inset semi-precious stones such as cairngorms or amethysts.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate hallmarks on the silver mounts, hand-carved horn structures with natural grain variations, and traditional construction methods such as tight-fitting hinged lids.

As a small cabinet of curiosities object, a snuff mull can be displayed on a bookshelf, desk, or mantelpiece to add historical texture and organic form to a curated room design.

Horn objects should be kept away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, and high humidity to prevent warping or cracking. Occasional gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth is recommended.
