This pair of architectural columns dates from the nineteenth century in a Baroque Revival style. The pieces consist of tall wooden shafts with black painted surfaces and intricate parcel gilt relief decorations, including carved masks, foliate scrollwork, birds, and classical motifs, complemented by moulded plinth bases and circular top capitals finished in gold leaf. Each column measures 186 cm high by 44 cm wide and 44 cm deep. These large items suit grand interior settings as decorative focal points in hallways, reception rooms, or libraries, where they stand directly on the floor to frame doorways, archways, or architectural features. The contrasting black and gold colour scheme creates a dramatic visual presence, while the detailed relief work runs continuously along the cylindrical bodies from the stepped square bases up to the flanged tops.

Architectural columns derived from classical Roman and Greek orders were revived during the Renaissance and 19th-century Neo-Classical periods as decorative structural elements for grand domestic interiors.

These decorative columns were typically constructed from carved timber or gesso-coated wood, which was then finished with black paint and accent gilding using gold leaf.

Authentic period columns display natural wear to the gilded highlights, genuine oxidisation of surface finishes, and subtle timber movement or cracking consistent with historic age.

Columns can be placed symmetrically to frame a doorway, positioned in a foyer, or used to flank a fireplace mantle to add architectural height and classical structure to a room.

Maintain gilded wood by dusting lightly with a dry soft brush or feather duster, avoiding water or solvent cleaners that dissolve water-gilding, and keeping the environment at a stable humidity.
