A Good 'Whitty' Staunton Boxwood & Ebony Chess Set, circa 1900

the chessmen with green baizes to the underside of the bases, the carved knights 'ebonised', nice figuring, patina and finish to the boxwood side, in a lidded mahogany box, lined with green baize and a brass hook clasp.

King: 10cm high (4 inches).

Pawn: 5.1cm high.

Box: 21.5cm x 13.7cm x 8.9cm.

Condition: Nice figuring to the boxwood, some natural flaws to the boxwood, green baizes good (one baize with slight loss to edge), the green baize to the box re-lined. A very nice chess set. Recommended.

This Edwardian chess set dates from around 1900 and follows the traditional Staunton pattern, fashioned from boxwood and ebony with ebonised hand-carved knight heads. The pieces rest on green baize undersides, accompanied by a lidded mahogany storage box secured with a small brass hook clasp and lined internally with green felt. The wood displays natural figuring and an aged patina, alongside minor natural flaws in the boxwood and a slight edge loss on one piece base. The storage box measures 21.5 cm wide, 13.7 cm deep and 8.9 cm high. Set out upon an office desk or a library table in a study, the ensemble provides both a functional board game and a period decorative accent for a gentleman's library interior.
