Description

Imari porcelain dish, Arita, Japan, c. 1700, Genroku Period. Painted with a a central panel, containing a large urn containing flowers, on a garden terrace.

The border with shaped panels of flowering plants, divided by floral scroll, on an underglaze blue ground.

Decorated in typical Imari colours, heightened in gilt.

The reverse with sprigs of flowers, and having spur marks within an unglazed foot rim.

Diameter – 26.5 cm, 10 1/2”.

Depth – 4 cm, 1 5/8”.

Condition – Typical minor age wear to the gilding. No damage. No restoration.

Imari porcelain originates from the town of Arita in Hizen province, Japan, and was widely exported to Europe during the Edo period via the Dutch East India Company.

These pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay, painted underglaze in cobalt blue, and overglaze decorated with iron red, gilt, and sometimes black enamel.
